Welcome to UCLA STIR
Supporting Teachers to Improve Retention

The shortage of credentialed mathematics teachers today is compounded by teacher turnover.  National reports show that over 50% of new mathematics teachers leave the profession or transfer jobs within the first 5 years.

STIR is funded by the California Postsecondary Education Commission under the Improving Teacher Quality Grants to address both dimensions of teacher retention across California. The three primary goals of STIR are:

  1. Provide a coherent and comprehensive induction and/or support program for teachers of mathematics that will increase retention, content knowledge, and leadership.
  2. Conduct research that adds to the knowledge base on mathematics teacher retention.
  3. Disseminate findings broadly.

The UCLA Mathematics Project offers many other programs, designed in collaboration with teachers to meet their needs and to follow the recommendations of the California Mathematics Framework and the NCTM Curriculum and Evaluation Standards. The programs focus on the current mathematics reform movement to reshape the mathematics curriculum, and they reflect the roles of technology and mathematics in today's society. Emphasis is placed on increasing the participation of female and underrepresented minority students in learning mathematics and on developing, nurturing, and sustaining teacher leaders.

UCLA MATH PROJECT SUMMER INSTITUTE

Bridging the Gaps for Students with Exceptional Needs

When:  June 28- July 1
Time: 8:30AM - 3:30PM
Where: UCLA

 Bridging the gaps will provide an intimate forum for all math teachers to engage in activities and discussions with the purpose of learning and sharing teaching strategies in all facets of special education. This institute will be led by Allan Yu, co-director of UCLA STIR and Math Discipline Coordinator for Wildwood School.

  • Examining and analyzing teacher practices - prevention vs. intervention
  • Understanding how students with processing deficits learn math
  •  Successfully implementing accommodations and modifications in a math classroom
  • Strategies for collaborating and co-teaching with the general education teacher
  • Implementing the California Mathematics Framework and Standards
  • Intervention strategies for teaching multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, and percentages
  • Realigning the scope and sequence to meet the special needs of the student
  • Learning Disabilities and the CAHSEE
  • Preparing the students for successful transitions in and out of the classroom
  • Using Math to modify behavior
  • Advocating for your students

An introduction to www.thatquiz.org. We will cover setting up a teacher account, designing practice sets and tests designs, browsing other teachers' materials and evaluating work.
12:45-1:30 Triangle Inequality Theorem: Can you Build a Triangle?

If we did not have the Triangle Inequality Theorem, would Triangles still exist? Learn an engaing way to teach the Triangle Inequality Theorem.
1:30-2:15 Bring it all Together: Classroom Activities, Technology, and Mathematics Exploration
Presenters: Rahila Munshi and Nikki Dang
This workshop will share tips and strategies for conducting exploratory math activities in an urban high school classroom setting. Handouts, links, ideas on implementation and potential results will be shared.
